Ubisoft sent out a press release today announcing the acquisition of Sweden-based developer Massive Entertainment, best known for its real-time strategy game World in Conflict. Ranked as one of the 50 best game studios in the world (by Game Developers Research in 2008), Massive's World in Conflict earned numerous awards and eschewed the traditional base-building/resource-gathering mechanics favored by the genre, similar to Ubisoft's recently-released Tom Clancy's EndWar.

Diligent readers have already noted in the user comments section of our recent review of EndWar that the distinct lack of content encompassing the southern hemisphere could indicate the possibility of future expansions or updates. Could the acquisition of Massive Entertainment be a move to bolster Ubisoft's capabilities within the RTS genre?
