Gearbox Software has confirmed what a handful of retailers let slip in early August: a Game of the Year edition of cell-shaded RPG Borderlands is on the way, and it's bringing all four DLC packs with it.

Gearbox made it official via a tweet yesterday, making Borderlands GOTY one of the most content-heavy games you'll find on the shelves when it drops on October.

Borderlands became a surprise hit for Gearbox and publisher 2K Games when it shipped in October, earning an 83 score on Metacritic and selling nearly 2.6 million copies. The title's unique look and mix of fast-paced shooting, loot grabbing, and leveling up made it a standout in a crowded holiday 2009 market.

Gearbox continued to impress with a string of DLC adventures for the game featuring ample storylines, new characters, and plenty of loot. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, and Claptrap's New Robot Revolution will all be bundled in the GOTY edition.

Borderlands GOTY is set to ship on October 12 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PCs.

Sharkey says: Borderlands is a very good but not great game, and it's extremely addictive for loot fiends like me. The add-on packs are what DLC should be, and were actually worth the $10 price tag. Speaking of which, the GOTY edition should be a great value given the core game and $40 worth of DLC.
