Yesterday we reported on a leaked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 video that displayed a third-person mode, and today Infinity Ward has confirmed that the mode is real. Community manager Robert Bowling explained how the mode will work to Kotaku:
3rd Person is a new playlist mode in Multiplayer, so you can play your favorite playlists [or] game types, like Team Deathmatch just standard, or in Hardcore mode ([with] limited HUD and increased bullet damage) or in the new 3rd Person mode, which means you and everyone in the game is in 3rd person.

When you're in a 3rd Person playlist you can't toggle in and out, you're always in 3rd person. You can't toggle 3rd person view on or off in a standard game type either, people in 3rd person can't play with people in 1st person, they're entirely different game modes. This is just another way to play the game.

Tyler says: Back in the day the most popular online shooter on consoles was a third-person-shooter: SOCOM anyone? But Modern Warfare 2 is the new "it" game, so it is a little weird that it'd offer the third-person view. Watching the gameplay video, it seems like the characters don't animate as well as games that are always in third-person (ie Uncharted 2) but I guess if you always wanted see how cool your dude looks with a rocket-launcher slung over his shoulder, now you can.
