Latest UK Call of Duty sales totals double GTA4's.
Day one UK sales of
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have started to come in, and already records are being broken. According to the
Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishing Association, the former sales champ in the UK was Grand Theft Auto IV, selling around 630,000 copies on its first day of sales (via
Eurogamer). But yesterday's MW2 launch easily overcame that number, selling 1.23 million copies and generating about 47 million British pounds, as compared to Rockstar's 27.2 million Pounds on GTA4's day-one sales.
While Director General of the ELSPA, Micheal Rawlinson, celebrates videogames' welcome to the "mainstream," he's also quick to mention the mature audience the game is intended for: "Just like some movies and books, this is specifically intended for an adult audience and accordingly has emotional, adult content." Numbers from the U.S. sales of MW2 have yet to come in, but it is expected that the game will break sales records stateside as well.
Tyler says: While it's no surprise that ModWar2 is selling well, the actual numbers can still be astonishing. If the game continues its UK trend worldwide -- selling double the amount GTA did -- the title could see upwards of seven million copies sold globally on day one. It took GTA4 a whole week to get to that number. Expect to hear back from us as soon as the U.S. numbers start to come in.
