This February, Microsoft will be releasing Crackdown, developed by Real Time Worlds and designer Dave Jones, the man behind Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings. The game expands upon the exploration of the urban sprawl that was popularized in Grand Theft Auto by introducing seamless cooperative gameplay, and a three-dimensional outlook on its environments, encouraging you to leap from rooftop to rooftop.
In a savvy move to pique additional interest in Crackdown, those who initially purchase the game will also be able to participate in the Halo 3 multiplayer beta test. This isn't restricted to solely those who preorder the game, and should also include those who purchase Crackdown at retail.
To help get you ready for Crackdown, GameSpy presents an exclusive movie, new screens, and a profile of one of Crackdown's gangs: The Volk.
In Crackdown, gangs control Pacific City, and it's up to the Agent to take the city back. One such gang is known as the Volk. They operate in the Den - and it has been held in a vice-like grip by the Volk for a number of years.
The Den was once the industrial heart providing power to Pacific City. These days its power station and refinery are used to boost the Volk's cash flow. The Den is split in two by a large man-made canal that runs the length of the district from East to West. This district is a strange mix of smaller basic buildings like warehouses to incredibly complex structures like the refinery. It has large, wide roads heaving with traffic that divide the numerous industrial structures.
This creates heart stopping moments as the Agent leaps from one high rooftop across the street to another; just to make it by their fingertips - demonstrating that the practice on the lower rooftops of La Mugre was worth it. The North Island houses the refinery - a building crawling with complicated network or pipes that snake in and out of every space possible. It is also the location of the massive Quarry that cuts into the large mountainous section of land found to the North East of the district. The South island is the larger of the two - it has many large high rise apartment buildings overlooking the district's busy main square, the red light district by the canal, the large Power Station with chimney stacks that dominate the skyline of the district, the Sewage Plant and the Docks that face out to sea where a vast oil rig can be seen off in the distance.
