Epic Games got Marcus Fenix fans buzzing when it revealed Gears of War 3 in April, and then came the bad news: we won't actually be able to get our hands on the game for a full year. Gears of War 3 isn't set to ship until April 2011. Now, in an effort to keep Gears gamers satisfied, Microsoft is inviting players back to the Gears of War 2 multiplayer with a major title update.

The title update, available today on Xbox Live, includes a number of fixes and tweaks as well as a new match feature that allows players to jump in and out of games without disruptions. These Social Matches also allow parties to join a match in progress or start a new match if no suitable online battles are found.

"With the improvements in Title Update 6 and the wide availability of the All Fronts Collection, players have plenty of time to hone their skills before the launch of Gears of War 3 in April 2011," Microsoft and Epic said in a statement.

There is, however, a bit of a catch. Social Matches are only open to players who own all four Gears of War 2 DLC map packs. Epic and Microsoft are hoping to nip that issue in the bud by releasing the All Fronts Collection, a pack that includes all previous Gears of War 2 DLC, for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

And to kick off the title update, the publisher and developer have announced a triple experience weekend beginning tomorrow at 2 p.m. GMT and running through Tuesday, June 1.

Sharkey says: It's unfortunate it took Microsoft and Epic almost two years to provide fixes and improvements to a deeply flawed multiplayer. But Gears for me has never been about the multiplayer (though Horde mode was fun for a time), it's about Marcus Fenix's adventure and the ongoing battle to save humanity from the Locusts and Lambent. Looking forward to Gears 3.
