Id Software's long-in-development new IP has already won enough awards to fill a sizable trophy case, and there are still eight months to go before the game is even released. Watch today's trailer for the post-apocalyptic FPS, and see why critics are so excited about Rage.

Powered by the studio's new id Tech 5 engine, Rage's stunning wasteland vistas come to life in this video, and it also provides a peek at the shooting and driving gameplay that's set to come:

Rage is being developed for Windows PCs, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game is set to ship on September 13 in North American and September 16 in Europe.

Sharkey says: It seems like an entire generation of gamers isn't aware of id Software (Rage was nowhere near yesterday's Ipsos ranking of the top 25 most wanted games of 2011). It's unfortunate given the studio's pedigree, but also understandable given Carmack and crew haven't released a new game since Doom 3 back in 2004. I've got high hopes Rage will take its place among Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake as a classic id franchise and put the studio back on top.
