The orc apocalypse is about to begin. Robot Entertainment announced today that action strategy game Orcs Must Die! will be available for download on PCs and Xbox Live Arcade this summer.

Created by the founders of Ensemble Studios in 2009, Robot Entertainment is the team behind the in-beta, free-to-play RTS, Age of Empires Online. The studio is partnering with Microsoft once again to publish its other title, Orcs Must Die! Check the trailer:

"Players on both Xbox Live Arcade and PCs will get their chance to massacre orcs by the thousands soon," CEO patrick Hudson said in a statement. "We're excited that Microsoft shares our orc bloodlust and will publish the game."

In Orcs Must Die! players become a war mage tasked with defending fortresses from the green-skinned hordes. Players will use classic tower-defense weapons, spells, and traps to repel the invaders, but unlike other top-down tower defense games, Orcs Must Die! uses a third-person perspective.

The game will be playable at the San Diego Comic-Con this week, and anyone that goes hands-on will receive a free prequel comic book that tells the story of a world under siege by savage monsters.

No pricing or specific release date were announced.

Sharkey says: I'm a fan of tower defense, and I'm really digging how the genre has evolved to include putting players in control of soldiers and weapons on the front lines, a-la Toy Soldiers and Trenched. Looking forward to seeing Robot's take.
