Sam Fisher makes Jack Bauer look delicate. But in Splinter Cell: Conviction, there is one thing not even the former Third Echelon agent can survive: a hallway to the right after the weapons cache on the second level. Splinter Cell forums are abuzz with the news that a patch released for the game today has actually made the game more buggy, including an unavoidable freeze on the second level.

Originally slated for a 2007 release, Conviction went into development limbo after Ubisoft decided to hit the reset button on the title to make it more accessible to a wider swath of gamers. At E3 2009, the "new" Conviction resurfaced with a November 2009 release date before being pushed back to February 2010. When February rolled around, Ubisoft once again bumped the game to April because it needed "more polish."

The official Splinter Cell forums began to buzz this morning with the news the game is buggy and freezes at different points. According to Ubisoft's tech support, the problem is related to the patch that was issued for the game today, and there is a temporary fix. However, it means gamers have to clear the system cache on their Xbox 360 hard drive and delete any progress they've made thus far in the game.

Ubisoft stated that clearing the system cache is only a temporary fix, and tech support is now working to permanently resolve the issue.

UPDATE:Ubisoft reports the issue has been resolved. The update can be downloaded and the game can now be played normally without problems.

Sharkey says: Coupled with the relatively minor problem related to the USB drives in the Limited Edition Splinter Cell: Conviction, this has been a less than stellar launch, particularly for a title that's been so-long in the making.
