Company exec says we'll be seeing a lot more mixed martial arts games in the future.
UFC Undisputed 2009 was an undisputed, and surprising, hit for
THQ, shipping more than 3.5 million units worldwide. It's a performance the developer hopes to duplicate on an annual basis; according to VP of core titles Danny Bilson, THQ wants Undisputed to become the company's Madden.
In an interview with
CVG, Bilson said Undisputed was just what the digital doctor ordered for a financially troubled THQ in 2009. "I'm not going to deny for one second that UFC wasn't a key lynchpin in essentially getting us a platform to rebuild from, and it absolutely is," Bilson told CVG. "UFC is an awesome game we release every year, it kicks ass, it's like our Madden."
We got a
first look at Undisputed 2010 last month and came away satisfied the second installment in the franchise will be far more than just a roster update. The game is set for release on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on May 25.
Sharkey says: THQ definitely needed a hit, and UFC Undisputed delivered a knockout. But is this a title we really need to see updated every single year? Describing Undisputed as THQ's Madden can mean two very different things.
